The Students Who Need Us Most

I recently found myself reflecting on this moment.

At a Turkey Trot event several years ago, I watched this student make his way toward the finish line. What stood out wasn't his finishing time; it was his determination to keep going.

Step after step, he pushed forward.

As I watched, I couldn't help but think about how often that same story plays out in our schools.

In every classroom, some students need a little more:

  • A little more encouragement.

  • A little more patience.

  • A little more confidence.

  • A little more belief.

Those are often the students who leave the greatest impression on us.

As educators and leaders, it's easy to become focused on data, budgets, strategic plans, and accountability measures. Those things matter. But when I look back on my career, the moments I remember most aren't found in reports or spreadsheets.

They're found in students.

The child who finally believes in themselves.

The student who overcomes a challenge.

The young person who succeeds because someone refused to give up on them.

We don't get to choose which students need us.

But we do choose whether we show up for them.

Every student has a finish line. It may look different for each child, but our role remains the same: encourage them, support them, and remind them they are capable of more than they realize.

Sometimes the most important thing we can do as leaders is simply help a student take one more step.
