Every Student Deserves a Fresh Start
Every new student deserves the opportunity to be known before they are judged.
When a student enters a new building or classroom, it can be tempting to begin with the records:
Previous discipline referrals.
Past conflicts.
Earlier mistakes.
That information may provide important context, but it should never become the student’s identity.
Before deciding who that child is, take the time to discover who they might become.
Learn their name.
Ask what they enjoy doing outside of school.
Find out what subject excites them, what makes them laugh, and what they hope will be different this year.
Most importantly, begin building a connection on Day 1.
Sometimes a new school, a new classroom, or simply one new adult who believes in them can give a student the fresh start they desperately need.
We should understand a student’s history, but we don’t have to sentence them to repeat it.
Let the relationship begin before the reputation enters the room.
How do you help new students feel known, valued, and welcomed from their very first day?
